Movicon Help on Line - Rel. 11.7.1302
OPC is the most commonly used standard due to its user-friendly communication modalities based on different bus technologies.
OPC stands for "OLE for Process Control", where OLE refers to the Windows' abbreviation of: "Object Linking and Embedding", a powerful automation interface for Windows applications.
OPC simply rounds off the programming concept to implement a unified interface of different bus technologies on one side and applications for vision and automation on the other. Thanks to standard technology, today's communication between automation devices offers more independence for the individual manufacturer, especially when their devices support the OPC standard. Thanks to the unified interface, hardware manufacturers can guarantee OPC interface availability by equipping their hardware products with OPC Server software products. This will ensure the end user the ability to interface their purchased product with any software application that supports the OPC standard.
|
The OPC standard is defined by public specifications released by the OPC Foundation consortium which are adhered to by Microsoft and all the major automation manufactures worldwide including Emerson. |
Movicon is an application based on both the OPC Client and OPC Server standards.
As Client it can interface with all the OPC Servers that follow the 1.0A and 2.0 standards; as Server it allows all or part of the project variables to be shared with other applications with event notifications, such as: Alarms, messages, system information and variable changes that happen in the project.
In view of the increasing consolidation of the OPC standard in industrial automation, this technology is to be considered only as a mode of communication with bus network devices or with other local or remote applications .

This figure shows a block diagram of a typical OPC communication procedure.
OPC XML DA Client
The OPC XML DA resource is no longer compatible with Movicon components as from the 11.5.1180 version. Therefore, the OPC XML DA functionality can only be used up to the Movicon 11.4 version.
